Tucan – Mayan Playing Cards
Introduction
Tucan is a premium playing card deck created for Pacific Novelty, inspired by the rich artistic heritage of the Maya civilization. As the project's graphic designer and illustrator, I developed the complete visual identity, creating original illustrations, card layouts, packaging, and graphic elements influenced by authentic Mayan art and symbolism. The design also incorporates the ancient Mayan vigesimal (base-20) numeral system, reinterpreting traditional card values through historical references while preserving the functionality and playability of a modern deck.

Playing Card Back Design A symmetrical card back inspired by Mayan decorative motifs and geometric compositions, designed to create a timeless and recognizable identity for the Tucan deck.
Playing Card Faces A complete set of custom playing cards inspired by the artistic traditions of the Maya civilization. Original illustrations reinterpret the familiar structure of a standard deck while introducing culturally inspired ornamental details and visual storytelling.
Court Card Illustrations Custom face card illustrations inspired by Mayan attire, iconography, and artistic traditions. Each character was designed to celebrate the richness of Mayan culture while maintaining a unified visual language across the entire deck.
Mayan Numerical System The numbered cards integrate the ancient Mayan numeral system, translating traditional card values into authentic bars-and-dots notation. This historical design element adds educational value while preserving the familiarity and usability of a contemporary playing card deck.
